How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays a critical part as your furnace prepares to heat your space.
Here’s what goes on after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This pushes out combustion gases from the heat exchanger and pulls in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and commands the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and creates heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Breaks Down
When your pressure switch isn’t working promptly, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking a couple times before the furnace switches off completely. When a part isn’t performing right, your furnace will turn off for your safety.
Your furnace will show you something is amiss with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to display error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may note quick flashes or an alternating slow flash as it communicates a fault code.
