Getting Ready for Air Conditioning Season

April 30, 2016

Summer isn’t here yet but the temperatures are definitely warming up and that means it’s time for air conditioning season. Before the heat sets in and you’re running your A/C system around the clock to stay comfortable, don’t forget to call your AC service technician to come out and complete your annual ac maintenance.

In addition to an AC system tune-up, there are several other ways you can get ready for the cooling season before warmer weather is officially here to stay.

  • Clean Your System

No, we aren’t implying that you should take your air conditioning unit apart, let an expert do that, but you can clean up the area around your system to clear away branches and foliage that have made their way to your A/C system during the windy winter and stormy spring. Keep the grass trimmed around the unit and prune back any overgrown shrubs or vegetation to make sure your air conditioning unit is clear of debris. Keeping a clear airway can help keep your A/C equipment running properly.

·     Change Your Home’s Air Filters

Finch Air Conditioning & Heating will replace your home’s basic air filters when they complete your air conditioning tune-up as part of your scheduled A/C maintenance. You can (and should) also swap out your HVAC air filters in between maintenance visits, and it’s suggested that you do so at least every 30-60 days for optimal performance. If you don’t change your air filter it accumulates dust, allergens, and germs so for the health of the people living in your home and the efficiency of your air conditioning equipment, make sure you’re changing those filters as part of your seasonal A/C system service. Note that a clogged filter could possibly damage your air conditioner.

  • Block the Sun

Help keep your home cooler by hanging blackout drapes or window shades to help keep the sun from heating up your home. Hanging drapes or curtains may also help protect your furniture and floors from fading or suffering from sun damage over time.

·     Check Alarm Batteries

If you didn’t spend daylight savings checking the batteries in your smoke and CO detectors, now it the perfect time. Don’t forget to also check the batteries in your thermostat to make sure it is running properly so you don’t end up calling your HVAC company because your air conditioner isn’t working and then it ends up just being the thermostat. You could also consider installing an automated thermostat so you can adjust the temperature remotely and save money on your heating and cooling bills.

An annual air conditioner tune-up service could make your system up to 30% more efficient and save you money on your cooling bills.
